Tea Tree (Melaleuca)

Acne:

[TOPICAL] This review of randomized controlled human studies shows that topical treatment with pure tea tree essential oil is an effective treatment for acne, with some of the studies showing it is equally as effective as benzoyl peroxide.

Anti-Fungal (Athlete’s Foot):

[TOPICAL] This human case-study showed that topical treatment with pure tea tree essential oil completely blocked the growth of foot fungus for 8 hours, despite the foot being in an enclosed environment (in a shoe), which normally causes fungal proliferation.

[TOPICAL] This double-blind randomized controlled human study showed that topical treatment with pure tea tree essential oil was effective at treating symptoms of athlete’s foot, but not quite as effective as the topical drug normally prescribed to treat it.

Lice:

[TOPICAL] This randomized controlled human study showed that, in people infected with head lice, topical treatment with pure tea tree essential oil combined with lavender essential oil resulted in a complete elimination of all head lice in 98% of people after three treatments, spread 7 days apart… which was equally as effective as standard “suffocation” lice treatment.

[TOPICAL] This randomized controlled human study showed that topical treatment with pure tea tree essential oil combined with lavender essential oil killed 44.4% of live head lice eggs after a single treatment.

Insect Repellant:

[TOPICAL] This in-vivo animal study showed that topical treatment with pure tea tree essential oil is a highly effective mosquito repellent—possibly even more effective than DEET, and less toxic as well.

[TOPICAL] This in-vitro animal study showed that topical treatment with pure tea tree essential oil is a highly effective fly repellent, and even kills flies with 100% efficacy after 12 hours of exposure.

Mechanisms of Action:

Tea tree oil has over 90 different bioactive compounds in it, and thus acts through multiple mechanisms. Its insect repellent properties arise from its ability to disrupt their cell membranes, inhibit their ability to breathe, and interfere with their nerve function, whether through direct contact or just from them inhaling it.
